Illegal blood banks
Police on Wednesday arrested a Nigerian for running an illegal blood bank in Lagos.
Achegbulu Paul, 45, was doing this business in his one-room apartment in Lagos, where donors are paid small sums of money before their blood is sold to hospitals at a profit.
A police press release said Paul offered people 2,000 naira per pint ($5.50), which he then sold for $19.
The trained lab technician said he had been operating the illegal bank for five years now. Investigations are ongoing as there are fears that the blood may be carrying infections since they were not screened before being sent to hospitals.
