Why people continue to stay in abusive unions cannot be sufficiently substantiated, however, scientists have averred that when one loves another amorously, the brain releases certain feel-good energy which makes the party overlook flaws that are obvious to third parties.
And in Peninah Wangechi’s case, she has her neighbours to thank for swiftly taking her to a Karatina Sub-county Hospital when her husband who had stabbed her 17 times and left her for dead surrendered himself to the police.
Wangechi sustained cuts on her back, chest and face in the domestic fight.
But curiously, Wangechi has asked the court where her husband is on trial to release him, further withdrawing the assault charges.
Wangechi from Karatina, Nyeri County, in Kenya, who is now separated from her husband Samuel Ndirangu, noted she is not being coerced, pressured nor induced to withdraw the charges but want to close the terrible chapter and move on with her life.
“I am not being forced by anyone to drop this case. I just want to let this matter go.”
The pair had been married for seven years, producing three children but in April, the woman nearly lost her life.
As Wangechi told The Standard, she had endured foul and threatening words from her husband but didn’t reckon he would want to actually kill her.
“He has always threatened to kill me but I never took it seriously since that was the way he spoke to me,” she said.
Things quickly escalated when a mutual friend sought to reconcile them.
“I never took the threats seriously before, but this time he took my phone and switched it off. He then took a knife and started stabbing me.”
When taken to the hospital, doctors said that though she had bled a lot, the knife wounds were not severe, reports Citizen Digital.
Her husband, who surrendered to the police after the attack, was detained at Karatina Police Station before being arraigned.
