NFL star Odell Beckham Jr. took to social media on Tuesday to respond to the backlash that came his way after claiming that a $100 million contract can’t last forever.

Though Beckham, 33, made those comments back in October during an appearance on The Pivot podcast, the video was recently circulated on social media, sparking a conversation after it went viral, Face2Face Africa previously reported.

Beckham ultimately addressed the negative furor that was directed at him after the video went viral. “Boy u can’t say nothin in this world nowadays, that’s why I been in my own lane my own world n put the way,” Beckham wrote on his X account on Tuesday.

“People love to take Shxt completely outta context to rationalize a statement in their own head that makes sense to them… what a world.”

During his October appearance on The Pivot podcast, Beckham gave a breakdown on why he felt that a $100 million contract can’t last a lifetime.

“I always explain this to people, you give somebody a five-year, $100 million contract, that’s five years for 60,” the former New York Giants star said at the time, per Complex. “We’re getting taxed. That’s 12 million a year that you have to spend, use, save, invest, flaunt, whatever.”

“I’m just being real,” Beckham, who made the news in 2018 after he signed a then-record-breaking $95 million contract with the New York Giants, added. “I’m going to buy a car, get my mom a house. Everything costs money. If you’re spending $4 million a year, that’s really $40 million over five years, eight million a year. You start breaking down the numbers, and that’s a five-year span, you’re getting eight million. Can you make that last forever?”

Shannon Sharpe, a retired NFL legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer, weighed in on Beckham’s claim and questioned how it was going to be difficult for someone to manage that kind of money.

“OBJ, I’ going to be honest with you, bro. If you get 60 million dollars liquid and that can’t last you a lifetime, you’ve got a problem,” Sharpe, said on his Nightcap podcast that was released on Monday.

“Do you really need 10 houses? Do you really need 15 cars? Do you need to buy everybody in your family a house that costs a million or two million dollars?” Sharpe questioned, per Complex

The 57-year-old then gave his own breakdown on why making those financial decisions was ultimately going to be costly along the line.

“First of all, if you buy somebody in your family a house that costs a million or two, first of all, they can’t afford the upkeep on it,” Sharpe explained. “You buy somebody a Mercedes, a Ferarri, a high-end car…if something happens to it, who are they calling?”

The former Denver Broncos star also emphasized that it did not make sense for someone without any business portfolio to spend $4 million annually.

“You out of your damn mind,” said Sharpe.
