Lexi Underwood is Sneakerella. She is the new hip hop princess at Disney playing the lead role in the new adaptation to the Disney classic, Cinderella. The Little Fires Everywhere star will take on the avant-garde street-sneaker subculture of New York City as the daughter of a legendary basketball star and sneaker tycoon.
This rendition showcases Underwood’s character, Kira King as a “fiercely independent” daughter of NBA superstar John Salley (Darius King). She meets an aspiring sneaker designer, El (Jacobs), who stocks shoes in a shop that once belonged to his late mother.
According to Deadline, the pair discover their shared love for sneakers with the help of a good friend and fairy godmother. El works hard to keep his designs from his two stepbrothers to enable him to fulfill his dreams of being a famous sneaker designer.
Disney’s VP of Original Movies Lauren Kisilevsky said in a statement cited by Deadline, “Sneakerella brings a vibrant, modern approach to a beloved story by suggesting that magic is the result of hard work and determination and exists within each of us.
“[Director] Liz Allen’s unique vision, Lexi and Chosen’s amazing chemistry, the incredible music and the gravity-defying choreography, will bring this movie to life and inspire audiences of all ages.”
The production for the movie is ongoing and Lexi could not hide her joy as she posted on social media about her excitement.
“Bibbidi bobbidi BOOM Disney’s got another black princess y’all,” she wrote.
