A well-deserved “Lifesaving Medal” was given to Sgt. Jeremy Barbin of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for saving two lives when a mother went into labor at home. The academy has praised the cop for his fast thinking after he responded skillfully to a man who flagged him down while his girlfriend was in labor.

He recounted in a video posted on the department’s Facebook page, “As I opened the door, I see a young lady lying on the ground and another middle-aged lady, saying, ‘Help me, help me.'”

His body camera footage captured him sprinting into the house and noticing the woman on the ground, evidently in labor.

After that, the courageous officer got to her feet to support her, according to The National Desk. Then, according to Barbin, he and his colleague “jumped into action” to assist in saving the infant.

He later told ABC 33/40, “The umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck, so we were able to get the cord off the baby’s neck.”

“I could feel the heartbeat, could tell the baby was breathing, but I didn’t have any means to clear the airway or anything like that. So [I] tried to sweep the mouth with my finger. [I] wrapped the baby up [to] keep it as warm as I could until paramedics arrived on the scene.”

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement provided to The National Desk, “It’s not every day that a deputy has the extraordinary experience of delivering a baby while on the job. This remarkable event showcases the dedication and professionalism of our law enforcement officers, who are always ready to go above and beyond in unexpected situations.”

The hero cop declared, “I believe God puts us in certain places to help, and it’s just right place, right time.”
