LSU Tigers women’s basketball star Flau’jae Johnson took to X on Tuesday to seemingly question Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry’s advocacy for a statue of deceased conservative influencer Charlie Kirk to be erected on campus.
Landry, in a video posted on X, challenged LSU’s Board of Supervisors to find a spot on campus to erect a statue of Kirk, who was assassinated on September 10 during an event at Utah Valley University.
Landry shared the video after he attended a Turning Point USA event in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, The Hill reported. Landry, who shot the video at LSU, advocated for the school to become the first campus to erect a statue of the controversial and deceased influencer.
“We’re here on campus, next to Mike the Tiger, and we’re going to put a challenge out to the LSU Board of Supervisors to find a place to put a statue of Charlie Kirk to defend the freedom of speech on college campuses,” Landry said.
He added: “Come on, ladies and gentlemen. Let’s see if we can be the first campus to do it.”
Landry, in his caption, also said that “there is no better warrior for free speech than Charlie Kirk, and we must continue his legacy on every campus in America.”
But it appeared Johnson, 21, did not like the idea of a Kirk statue on the LSU campus, as she cited Landry’s video with question marks.
“For the sake of clarity, if you align yourself with or endorse his racist rhetoric and discriminatory views toward people of color, I respectfully ask that you utilize the unfollow option at the top right of my profile,” she also wrote.
Johnson’s initial question mark quote drew several comments from X users. One of them even accused Johnson of being a “race baiter” and said that she had lost a fan because of her comments. But it appeared Johnson did not care, as she responded, “Bye.”
Following Kirk’s assassination, many Conservatives have been calling for campuses to honor him by erecting his statue. But critics have registered their displeasure with that initiative, making reference to several of Kirk’s controversial comments.
