George Boyer Vashon

George Boyer Vashon was also the first African American attorney in New York. He was called to the New York Bar on January 11, 1848, after a stint in Syracuse. He was initially barred from joining the Bar in Pennsylvania in 1847. He was finally called to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1867, according to the Historical Society of New York courts.

He graduated from Oberlin College and became Howard University’s first Black professor. He ventured into the teaching profession in Haiti and worked for Freedman’s Bureau after the Civil War. He was actively involved in African American rights campaigns against racial segregation and social injustice.
