Rev. Amos Freeman

Another key African American to have blazed the trail was Rev. Amos Freeman. He graduated from the Oneida Institute in the 1830s, according to Colored Conventions. Prior to his graduation, he was actively involved in the abolitionist movement. He was part of the participants of the first State Convention of Abolitionists in New Jersey where he represented Essex County in the state of New Jersey Anti-Slavery Society.
