Nana Kwaku Bonsam (pictured below), a well-known witch doctor in Ghana, is claiming responsibility for Real Madrid and Portugal football star Cristiano Ronaldo‘s (pictured) knee injury that is threatening his chance to play in the upcoming World Cup matches. According to Bonsam, he predicted four months ago that Ronaldo would miss the tournament — due to spells he has been performing.

Nana Kwaku BonsamThe witch doctor’s name translates to “Devil of Wednesday,” and he explained to Kumasi-based radio station Angel FM how his brand of magic may keep the reigning FIFA World Player of the Year on the sidelines.

Portugal’s pre-World Cup friendlies with Mexico and Ireland are taking place in the United States this week. Portugal has issued concerns about Ronaldo’s fitness, releasing a statement Wednesday detailing the star’s left-leg patellar tendinitis and left leg muscle injury.

Bonsam, who serves at the Kofioo Kofi shrine, says that conventional medicine will not help Ronaldo recover.

The Guardian reports:

“I know what Cristiano Ronaldo’s injury is about, I’m working on him,” Bonsam, who serves at the Kofioo Kofi shrine, said in an interview with the Kumasi-based Angel FM.

“I am very serious about it. Last week, I went around looking for four dogs and I got them to be used in manufacturing a special spirit called ‘Kahwiri Kapam.'”

Bonsam’s aims would make sense, considering that the Ghana Black Stars team face a tough draw by being placed in Group G in the 2014 World Cup. The so-called “Group Of Death” boasts Portugal, Germany, and the United States.

Ghanaians are confident that the Black Stars will flourish in the tournament, although their chances are slim if history proves to be a measure. Still, Bonsam is hoping his brand of magic will give Ghana an edge.

More from The Guardian:

“I said it four months ago that I will work on Cristiano Ronaldo seriously and rule him out of the World up or at least prevent him from playing against Ghana and the best thing I can do is to keep him out though injury.

“This injury can never be cured by any medic. They can never see what is causing the injury because it is spiritual. Today, it is his knee, tomorrow it is his thigh, next day it is something else.”

The 2014 World Cup kicks off on June 12th. Ghana opens up the tournament on June 16th against the United States.
