New York City Mayor Eric Adams disclosed on Tuesday that he has been avoiding news consumption for the past four weeks.
This decision comes amid a challenging period for the mayor, as reported by the New York Post. “I sleep so much better, I just feel so much at ease,” he said during his weekly briefing with reporters.
“It’s like, almost, if you eat junk food every day you’re going to get physical obesity. I was going through mental obesity.”
Adams revealed that avoiding news has improved his mental health amid mounting controversies.
Over the past month, Adams has faced allegations of being influenced by former President Trump during a federal corruption case. There have also been calls for his resignation amid historically low approval ratings.
His comments came in response to a question about former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who recently entered the Democratic mayoral primary as the frontrunner.
Cuomo’s candidacy has drawn support from key Adams allies, including the husband of Brooklyn Democratic chairwoman Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn.
“Is Andrew Cuomo getting under your skin?” the reporter asked.
Adams revealed that his longtime girlfriend, Tracey Collin, advised him to avoid reading newspapers or following the news.
Instead, she suggested he rely on his staff for essential updates. Adams revealed this strategy has helped him manage stress.

“I don’t have a clue what you guys have been writing for the last few weeks.”
The mayor, known for using dieting to address personal challenges, credits his shift to a vegan diet for saving his vision and life from diabetes.
