A Chicago mother said she’s “traumatized” and hasn’t “really been sleeping” after a dissatisfied Uber driver allegedly damaged her family home and car over a one-star rating that her teen son gave him.
According to ABC7 Chicago, the Uber driver damaged the home’s front window and also left scratches and dents on the woman’s car. The news outlet did not reveal the woman’s identity and her home address because of safety concerns. And though the incident happened a few days ago, the woman said she was yet to recover.
“I’m really traumatized, I haven’t really been sleeping,” she said. The woman said that the Uber driver took her son to the Orland Square Mall on Friday, August 23, adding that the driver appeared to be upset and wasn’t driving properly during the trip. She also said her son told the driver to use the expressway, but he ignored the teen’s suggestion and rather plied on surface streets.
“I was just trying to make it to the mall and I was trying to get there within a certain amount of time, and he decided to take the longer way to the mall,” the unidentified teen explained.
The teen said he ultimately gave the driver a one-star rating after he reached his destination. But the driver took issue with the rating and went to the family’s home the next day.
“The guy was like, I picked up someone from this house and they left something and I knew it wasn’t a belonging of anybody in this house,” she recalled after the driver knocked on the door.
She told ABC7 Chicago that after she declined to open the door, the driver got into a state of anger and aggression and yelled at her because of the one-star rating. “At the end of the day, somebody should have the right to a review,” she said. “It’s opinion based. If you have a one star, you have a one star.”
She said the man threw a brick at her window and car before he left the property. And though no injuries were reported, the family said the incident has negatively impacted them. “Coming to my home where my mom and my brother lay their head and I lay my head, it’s scary,” her son said.
A spokesperson for Uber responded to the incident in a statement, describing the driver’s conduct as “unacceptable.” “We’re continuing to investigate this report and will take appropriate action. We are standing ready to assist police however we can,” the spokesperson added.
The woman said she has since reported the incident to her local police department. The department also confirmed it has received her report.
