The 23-year-old son of veteran New York rapper Remy Ma has been arrested and charged in connection with the 2021 shooting death of a 47-year-old man. According to XXL, Jayson Scott, who is also Remy Ma’s oldest son, was arrested in The Bronx.

Authorities on Tuesday charged him with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, and reckless endangerment in the first degree. Besides Scott, authorities also arrested and charged another suspect linked to the 2021 fatal shooting of Darius Guillebeaux.

That suspect, identified as Richard Swyger, also faces a slew of charges including first-degree murder, reckless endangerment in the first degree, and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.

Authorities in a statement said Guillebeaux was gunned down on June 7, 2021. “Police responded to a 911 call of a male shot at the intersection of 148 Street and Rockaway Boulevard, within the confines of the 113 Precinct,” an NYPD spokesperson told the hip-hop magazine.

“Upon arrival, officers observed a 47-year-old male, unconscious and unresponsive, with multiple gunshot wounds to the head and chest. EMS responded to the location and transported the victim to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.”

Investigators looking into the case are also trying to ascertain if Guillebeaux’s killing was likely a murder-for-hire crime, Fox 5 New York reported. This is, however, yet to be confirmed. Meanwhile, a rep for Rema Ma on Wednesday shared a statement with PEOPLE in response to the award-winning rapper’s son’s arrest.

“As many have heard, Remy Ma’s son, Jayson Scott was recently arrested and very serious unfounded allegations have been made. Remy Ma wished to address this situation personally, but has been strongly advised by our office not to say anything publicly – as most people in this situation are, as the case is still active. To be clear, Jayson Scott is innocent and Remy Ma is committed to proving his innocence and fully supporting her child during this time,” the statement said.

“We stand by Jayson’s innocence and hope the NYPD will conduct a complete and thorough investigation to reveal the truth. This has undoubtedly been a trying time for Remy Ma and her family. While she sincerely appreciates the love and support she has received, we kindly ask that her privacy be respected as their legal team works to prove Jayson’s innocence.”

Born Reminisce Kioni Mackie, Remy Ma is regarded as one of the most talented female rappers of all time. Some of the 44-year-old’s hit songs include Whuteva, Conceited, Lean Back, and All The Way Up.

But the Grammy-nominated rapper has also similarly faced personal legal woes. In 2008, Remy Ma was handed an 8-year prison sentence for shooting and injuring her associate Makeda Barnes-Joseph, XXL reported. Her sentencing came after she was found guilty of charges including attempted coercion and assault. She was released in 2014 after serving six years of her sentence.
