Rwanda and these four African countries are the ‘worst jailers of journalists’

Egypt tops Africa with a growing number of arrests and documented abuse, says CPJ researchers. This comes off the back of the recent arrest and imprisonment of journalists Alaa Abdelfattah, Nasser Abdelhafez, Engi Abdel Wahab, and others who have been imprisoned for their reporting.

According to authorities, they have been arrested on charges of spreading false news or joining a banned group. Those charges, however, have become nothing more than thin excuses to arrest journalists for their coverage of the protests against the government.
