Expectant mother, Teyana Taylor, wants the queen of Neo-Soul, Erykah Badu, to be part of the special “welcoming committee” when she conceives.
Speaking to Nick Cannon on his Power 106 radio show, the 29-year-old singer, who is expecting a second daughter with basketball star and husband, Iman Shumpert, revealed Badu will help deliver their baby from home. Badu, 49, is a part-time doula.
This won’t come off as something new for the Made It singer, as she unexpectedly had her first daughter, Junie, in their bathroom at home with the help of her husband.
“You know what’s crazy, even though the Junie story is crazy, it kind of put me in a comfort zone where I don’t … I don’t know if I want to go to the hospital for this next baby,” she said. “I’m considering home birth, and I’m actually going to be doing it with Erykah. Her and Iman are going to deliver my baby. I’m super excited. I’ma have her just sing her verse from ‘Lowkey’ to me to calm my nerves.”
She added: “If I did it once without any type of warning I can do it this time fully prepared. Giving birth like that was scary, but it was such a powerful thing. It felt so powerful.”
It is safe to say Taylor will be in safe hands as Badu has an impressive record as a doula. Speaking to Pitchfork in 2015, Ms. Badu revealed how she became a birthing coach and how she goes about that.
“It just kind of happens. I don’t plan how many people I work with. I don’t charge anything. It’s for my own learning, and I just enjoy being the welcoming committee,” she said.
“I became a doula by default. I had Seven [son with Andre 3000] naturally, at home, and a couple of years later I was traveling through Europe, and one of my best friends, Afya, who is the wife of stic.man from dead prez, went into labor,” Badu added. “I naturally knew what to do, and it was then that I figured out that this was something I can do that makes me so fulfilled.”
This won’t be the first “collaboration” between Taylor and Badu as the latter features on her latest album, The Album. Taylor, who is a huge fan of Badu, spoke about her excitement when she managed to secure a verse from her in an interview with Ebro Darden on Apple Music.
“I have to brag about this because I’m very excited about this,” she said. “Erykah’s just not giving anybody features. I get the chills every time I hear her on this track because it took me three months to ask her. That’s how scared I was.”
She continued: “Even if she would’ve said no, I would have been happy to even know that she heard the record. I was prepared for her to say no because this is Erykah Badu. It meant a lot to me because it also showed me that my hard work wasn’t going unnoticed.”
