Chinguetti Libraries (9th century) – Mauritania
The city of Chinguetti itself is centuries old and dates as far back as the 8th century. Originally established in 777 CE, elite settlers built libraries before the 9th century and stocked them with texts that contained religious, historical and social developments. Many of the texts also contain information on expeditions to other kingdoms and trading accounts. The city and its libraries still exist today and can be visited by tourists.
