Stokely Carmichael – Kwame Toure
The originator of ‘black power’, Stokely Carmichael, was a civil rights activist who fought tirelessly to promote the cause of black people. He is on record as the youngest person to have been imprisoned for his participation in the 1961 Freedom Rides. In 1961, the outspoken and fearless Black Panther leader changed his name from Stokely Carmichael to Kwame Toure in honor of the Guinean leader Sekou Toure and Ghanaian leader, Kwame Nkrumah.
