The statue of the former United States Supreme Court Justice Roger Taney was removed in August 2017.   Taney authored the Dred Scott decision, which defended slavery and stated that African Americans could never be U.S citizens and had no rights, which the white man was bound to respect.

Other statues removed included the Confederate Gens. Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, a Confederate Soldiers and Sailors monument and a Confederate Women’s monument.
