Coastal forts and castles, Ghana

The coastal forts and castles which played a role in the gold trade and later the slave trade are also crumbling due to coastal erosion and sea-level rise.

It is significant to note that rising sea levels and coastal erosion are not the only threats faced by African heritage sites, said the researchers. Factors like flash floods and increasing humidity, which leads to the growth of bacteria and algae over rock art, can also do harm.
