The 65-year-old lawyer and migration expert ran for PM Costa’s Socialist party.

A member of the UN’s International Organization for Migration and the Governing Board of the High Commissioner for Migration, she said that her election into parliament has a “symbolic meaning” because it allows the “deepening of democracy itself.”

Fernandes, who ran to “firmly fight discrimination” said she hopes to set an example to the younger ones that “it is possible to get there”.
