Top 5 African musicians who double as activists

Hugh Masekela

South African jazz musician, trumpeter, composer, singer, flugelhornist, and cornetist Hugh Ramapolo Masekela is best known for “Soweto Blues,” “Bring Him Back Home,” “Up, Up and Away,” and “Grazing in the Grass.” Masekela served as the board director of Lunch Box Fund – a program geared towards feeding students in the Soweto province.  In the 1980s, he founded the Botswana International School of Music (BISM) and taught the Jazz course provided by the institute.  Masekela died from prostate cancer on January 23, 2018.
