Trap Spelling Bee is one of the games celebrating Black culture. It is a card game that features African-American Vernacular English, or AAVE, in its play. A family-friendly game, Trap Spelling Bee also highlights the humor and culture within the urban community using the unique spelling of slang and ebonic words, according to the company’s website.
“Our goal is to create an atmosphere of laughter, joy and love among family and friends, and to educate those who are unfamiliar with the urban culture-coded language,” the company further noted.
Since the launch of the game, it has achieved phenomenal success, recording over $1 million in sales recently and getting several celebrity endorsements. Snoop Dogg, Chance the Rapper, Jordin Sparks, and Roy Woods Jr. are some of the celebrities who have played and promoted the game.
“I started Trap Spelling Bee in August 2019,” creator of the game Demarco Robinson told Dear Fathers. “The goal is for players to spell trap and Ebonics words. The idea came out of conversations with friends. I’ve always thought about ways black people have a unique way of communicating with one another through our own words or culture.”
“The game(s) are playing cards in which Trap Spelling Bee was the first game I created and now I have 13-14 games available. Lovers Land and Sing A Song Sing Along are a few other of my games,” Demarco, from Midwest City, Oklahoma, added.
So far, the total number of games sold under the brand is 33,110 units, with Trap Spelling Bee’s flagship game selling 6,102 units, a statement said. Demarco loves the fact that his game is the reason families, especially Black families, are staying connected. “I want that for us. I want to bring love, joy, and laughter,” he said.
