The sitcom black-ish which features an upper-middle-class African-American family won big at the 2018 NAACP awards. The critically celebrated show won the Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series with the award going to Anthony Anderson, Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series award going to Tracee Ellis Ross, Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series award going to Marsai Martin, and Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series award going to Anton Cropper.
The show is set in California and showcases Anthony Anderson’s character as an advertising executive, Tracee Ellis Ross’s character as an anesthesiologist, Yara Shahidi’s character as the popular, know-it-all, and socially active oldest daughter, Marcus Scribner as the second to oldest “nerd” and un-cool son, Miles Brown as the spirited 10-year-old fraternal twin to Marsai Martin who boasts of her smarts and wit whenever she can, and Jenifer Lewis as Anderson’s fictional mother. The cast also has reoccurring characters such as Laurence Fishburne and Raven Symone to name a few.
Black-ish is endearing to many because it’s relatable to many in the African-American community. Even if you’re not included in the financial bracket of the characters, there are certain themes that arise that you probably can relate to. The writers of the show don’t back away from including social, racial, and political content in the storylines either. Episodes have touched on discrimination, police brutality, issues within the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transsexual (LGBT) community, and the 2016 presidential election. Black-ish merges entertainment with real-life challenges to produce very likeable content.
Another big winner was Daniel Kaluuya for his role in the acclaimed film Get out. Kaluuya plays Chris, the boyfriend of Rose played by Allison Williams. In the film, Kaluuya meets William’s parents and other family members and notices a plethora of strange behaviors.
The NAACP Image Awards is spearheaded by the NAACP and aims to highlight the accomplishments of African-Americans in film, television, music, and literature present within the calendar year. This year marks the esteemed organization’s award show’s 49th year in rotation.
