Poem: We Were Toys

by Oni Abidemi Martins, 11:33am July 03, 2015,
Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea

Deaths in dozens had we dropped
And this rain had not stopped
Red rain……………red rain
And valiants still in vain drain!

Brimstone and sulphur utters unblemish
And consummation of hid-heads to banish
And silent wait under whims of condemnation
Countless harmless hopefuls wither in exhumation

During my time I retrieve
Everyone would rather live
As slaves under tie
Than, as freemen, die

We playthings at Pharaoh’s palms
Spans of wealth-bred toy-things beg alms!
