On this day in 1964, Kenya gained independence from Britain after several attempts at liberation. A struggle that lasted many decades, the nation located in East Africa has grown in leaps and bounds to become one of the most prosperous nations on the continent.
With a population of approximately 49.7 million people in 2017, it is the 29th most populous country on the continent and the 48th largest country in the world by total area.
It is bordered by South Sudan to the North West, Ethiopia to the North, Somalia to the East, Uganda to the West, Tanzania to the South and the Indian Ocean to the South-East. Its largest city is Nairobi. Mombasa remains its oldest and first capital.
