The Fort James
The Fort James in Accra, Ghana, better known as the James Fort, was built by the British as a trading post in 1673. Fort James gave its name to the Jamestown neighbourhood in Accra. The fort stands next to Jamestown Lighthouse and from colonial times up to 2008, the fort served as a prison. It is the same place which held Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah till his election victory and release in 1951 to become Head of Government Business.
The fort’s prisoners were absorbed by other prisons in the country as it had become congested. It is in a moderately good condition serving as a tourist centre. Its doors get open to tourists from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Local graffiti artists have decorated the walls with various creative images as well.
