This week, when I was traveling, I noticed the climate was affecting my skin. My beauty instincts immediately kicked in to gear, and I found the nearest grocery store for my arsenal. Like most women of color, I have normal and at times combination skin (an oily T-zone), so my skin needs to be exfoliated. Exfoliation helps remove the dead skin cells and other remaining impurities from my face, keeping my complexion clear. Here’s a guide to help you find safe exfoliating scrubs that are easy to make from home, inexpensive, and good for your skin!

The beauty industry has a million products that will exfoliate your skin or at least that’s what the packages state.  Most products, though, contain plastics, irritating fragrances, glycerin, parabens, phthalates, and other questionable ingredients. These commercially prepared exfoliating scrubs can do a lot of damage to your delicate facial skin. One solution to this reality is to create your own exfoliator!

DIY Simple Sugar Face Scrub

To make your own exfoliator, try making this Lemon and Sugar Face Scrub.

What You Will Need:

  • Fresh lemon juice
  • Sugar
  • Olive oil
  • Honey

How You Do It:

Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl until combined. Rub on to clean face by using gentle circular motions, avoiding the eyes.  Rinse with water and pat dry.

This scrub provides exfoliating goodness while moisturizing and brightening the skin and tightening pores.

For those of you that hate “cooking,” I also recommend using Honey Girl Organics Facial Honey Girl OrganicsScrub (pictured), which is a simple blend of organic aloe gel, coconut butter, cane sugar, raw pupukea wildflower honey, and pineapple and papaya enzymes that helps to wash away dead skin cells, increase blood circulation, reduce fine lines, and smooth skin.

Honey Girl is good for all skin types.
