Study Links Cell Phones to Brain Cancer

by Azuka onye, 12:00am June 20, 2011,

Study Links Cell Phones to Brain CancerA World Health Organization (WHO) study may have identified a link between cell phones and brain cancer. The study was conducted in different countries around the world.

The data concluded that participants who used their cell phones at least 30 minutes per day for over 10 years had a 40 percent increased risk of developing a glioma.

Gliomas are tumors that arise from the glial cells in the central nervous system. They have a poor prognosis and are rarely curable.

What is perplexing about this research study is that, with the increase in the amount of cell phone usage worldwide, the rates of this type of brain cancer have not increased.
Because these tumors are slow growing, it may be that not enough time has passed to be able to identify the affected individuals. In fact, we may see an increase in the number of patients diagnosed with brain tumors in the future.

The regulations set in a number of developed and developing countries are years behind the science and new research studies being conducted.

For these reasons, the WHO has stressed the importance of being cautious when regulating exposure to radiation from cell phones.
