As it does every year, TIME magazine has released its 100 Most Influential People list, featuring some popular world leaders, politicians, and artists. The American news magazine has divided the list into five categories: pioneers, leaders, artists, titans and icons, all from various parts of the world.

First published in 1999 following a debate among American academics, journalists, and politicians, the annual list is now extremely recognized.
Being mentioned on the list comes with so much pride, and TIME makes it clear that entrants are recognized for changing the world, regardless of the consequences of their actions.

The final list of influential individuals is exclusively chosen by TIME editors with nominations coming from the TIME 100 alumni and the magazine’s international writing staff.

This year, five African influencers were highlighted for making an impact in their communities and around the world.
