A day after the historic inauguration of Vice President Kamala Harris as the first woman Vice President in U.S. history, her two great-nieces are the talk of the town. The faux fur leopard coats, worn by 4-year-old Amara and 2-year-old Leela Ajagu, daughters of Harris’ niece, Meena Harris, are all the rave now. But it has now emerged that the young fashionistas put on the special custom made coats not only for fashion’s sake but to honor their great-aunt, Kamala.
Meena Harris, Kamala’s niece and parents of Amara and Lee, disclosed this in a Twitter post. Her children’s coats were identical to that worn by their great-aunt when she was a little girl.
Meena shared an adorable collage on Twitter of her two girls in the fuzzy hooded coats featuring a throwback family photo of a young Kamala; Meena’s mother, Maya Harris; and her grandmother, Shyamala Gopalan, a biomedical scientist with her grandfather, Donald Harris, a Jamaican native who was an economics professor at Stanford.
“Special coats to look just like Auntie’s,” the photo was captioned.

To Amara and Lee, recreating the look was an ode to their great-aunt and they could not have rocked them any better. The custom-made coats were designed and hand-sewn in Oakland, California, the vice president’s hometown by the woman-owned children’s wear brand, iloveplum, which is naming the coats ‘Kamala’ after the vice president. The coat will also be available to shop soon on the company’s site.
“When I Love Plum heard back from Meena and that she loved the coats they had sketched, their designer spent the past weekend sewing them from hand,” a press release from the brand said.
The 36-year-old mother of the two lovely style stars also looked gorgeous in a Ulla Johnson dress with a Coach shearling coat.
However, her Facebook executive husband, Nikolas Ajagu’s sleek pair of Dior x Air Jordan 1 sneakers also caught the attention of viewers, People reports. Meena expressed her shock as her husband was hailed by sneakerheads on Twitter. “I step away from Twitter for less than an hour for the inauguration ceremony and Nik’s shoes are #1 trending?????” “I cannot,” she added.
The rare pair of Jordan’s was released in 2020 and reportedly retails for $2300 a pair having produced only 8500 pairs. Now there are nearly five million hopefuls waiting to land their own pair of this line which retails between $10,000 to as high as $25,000.
All that anyone can confirm is the Harris family plus the beautiful guests at Wednesday’s inauguration did bring the A-game on the style front as everyone looked effortlessly stunning for the momentous inauguration of the 46th President of the United States of America.
