Love knows no boundaries and when two people feel the same way for each other, it’s highly unlikely nothing – be it laws, customs or tradition, will keep them apart.
During segregation and colonization in the United States and Africa respectively, interracial relationships were shunned upon. However, some couples rose above the discrimination and challenged the system for the sake of their unbreakable bond.
Take the Loving v. Virginia case for example. Mildred Loving, a black woman and her white husband, Richard Loving, were sentenced to a year in jail in 1958 for their union which was ruled by a Virginia court as illegal. Their subsequent appeal led to the historic 1967 Supreme Court ruling that nullified all restrictions on marriage based on race.

The first president of Botswana and then chief of the Ngwato or Bamangwato people, Seretse Khama, was forced by the British colonial administration to give up his throne for five years after marrying Ruth Williams Khama, a white woman in 1948.
