The Marvel Cinematic Universe always gives subtle hints of its next installment in the movie credits. Just as the “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” installment ended, the new Captain America was revealed. Sam Wilson played by Anthony Mackie takes up the shield and takes on the responsibility of Captain America.
First, the title of the Disney+ series changed from “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” to “Captain America and The Winter Soldier.”
There are reports that Malcolm Spellman is writing a fourth “Captain America” film with Mackie’s Wilson in the title role, and the new poster, as well as the title change, authenticates the reports about the series creator’s intentions, according to GMA.
During the series, Wilson was conflicted about being a Black Captain America. The role brings with it the responsibility of balancing the scales of right and wrong and being the custodian of all things right and fair. “The legacy of that shield is complicated,” Wilson said. But he ultimately accepted to take it on and “do something different” with the responsibility.
In his final day as Falcon, Mackie’s character spoke about what it means to pick up the shield and mantle of Captain America. “Every time I pick this thing up, I know there are millions of people out there who are going to hate me for it. Yet I’m still here. No super serum. No blond hair or blue eyes. The only power I have is to believe we can do better.”
Marvel Studios has made the change official by releasing an official poster of Mackie in his all-new red-white-and-blue super suit. Wilson (Mackie) is seen relinquishing his role as Falcon and accepting to take on his new role as Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers handed over his shield at the end of “Avengers: Endgame”. He however kept on his wings to give him some added abilities.
His wings can be used as a shield like that of Wonder Woman’s golden armor from “Wonder Woman 1984 ”, made with the nation’s invincible metal known as vibranium.
Mackie’s version of the Captain America costume is a merger of his Falcon costume and that of Captain America. “The white and red touches make it clear that this new iteration of Cap was born from Falcon and Steve Rogers’ star-spangled man. Plus the digitally-added Falcon wings and Captain America shield complete the look,” Michael Crow, the costume designer for “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” told Insider.
