Drew Kohn was on his way to the gym when a car hit him, rendering him unconscious. The incident happened days before he celebrated his 23rd birthday. He was comatose for 244 days after he suffered a brain injury, two impaled lungs, a broken shoulder, and other injuries, First Coast News reported.
Kohn was even suggested to be brain-dead by doctors, and they informed his mother Olanda Osborne-Kohn that he would never have the ability to walk or talk. “They would have harvested his organs,” Osborne-Kohn recalled.
“It was because of my faith that gave me the boldness to speak up and push back and let them know ‘you’re not getting a toenail or an eyelash.’”
Kohn managed to recover after being admitted to the hospital for five months. His story also made waves in the media as he used his subsequent recovery journey to encourage others finding themselves in the same situation to push hard.
But a few days before he celebrated his 30th birthday, he was fatally struck by a car on Friday, July 27, 2024. Officials with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the driver who hit him is cooperating with authorities, adding that the driver did not see him immediately before the crash. The driver, however, stopped and called 911 in the wake of the fatal incident.
Despite his demise, his mother said she’s happy that he’s now resting. “Drew is healed, walking, not struggling to keep his balance,” Osborne-Kohn said. “His arm is probably lifted so high saying ‘Thank you, Jesus!’ Drew probably has a football in one hand and a Bible in the other.”
“God honored my request, and I’m not mad. I’m not angry. I’m at peace. I got seven years and like Hezekiah who turned his face to the wall, I remember sitting on Drew’s hospital bed and saying to myself, ‘Thy will be done,” she added.
“Drew loved God, and because of God’s nature when he answered my request, there are no words I have of malicious intent towards my creator. He gave me a gift and turned around and gave me seven plus years.”
Kohn’s family has since set up a GoFundMe to raise funds for his funeral expenses.
