A young Black doctor from California has tragically passed away following a scooter accident.
According to a report from the Daily Mail, Dr. Geohaira Sosa, a first-year psychiatry resident at UC Davis, died around 10:30 a.m. on August 29, 2024, after being struck by a vehicle in Sacramento.
The collision occurred near the 1200 block of Alhambra Boulevard, at the intersection with Folsom Boulevard.
In the wake of her passing, the UC Davis Department of Psychiatry launched a GoFundMe campaign in her name. The page shared that Dr. Sosa had only begun her residency two months earlier, having recently moved from Queens, New York.
“Geo was an absolutely beautiful person, inside and out. Many of her co-interns who had the privilege and joy of spending time with her over the past few months felt she was becoming one of our best friends. She radiated joy, kindness, and authenticity. We hope to carry forward her spirit in our communities,” the crowdfunding page stated.
Originally from Puerto Rico, Dr. Sosa was the first in her family to pursue a career in medicine. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biology and psychology from Queens College as a first-generation college student.
The Sacramento Bee reported that she also held a master’s degree in urban bioethics and attended medical school at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. Additionally, she worked on a newsletter providing health education to current and formerly incarcerated individuals.
Dr. Geohaira Sosa served as a mental health ambassador for low-income college students with mental health challenges.
As of now, the GoFundMe campaign has raised $36,396, surpassing its original goal of $30,000.
