American television personality Whoopi Goldberg faced criticism after calling herself “a working person” on The View.
Goldberg’s comment came during a discussion about U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s viral Instagram story, where the congresswoman asked her district’s followers why they voted for her, as well as for President-elect Donald Trump, in the 2024 election.
“I appreciate that people are having a hard time. Me too. I work for a living,” Goldberg said in response to co-host Sunny Hostin’s remarks on how voter concerns about the economy influenced election results. Hostin also pointed out that the ongoing conflict in Gaza impacted voters. Goldberg later added, “If I had all the money in the world, I would not be here, OK? So, I’m a working person.”
Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin noted that many people “had more money five years ago.” Goldberg countered, saying that the economy shouldn’t be voters’ only focus. “My kid has to feed her family. My great-granddaughter has to be fed by her family. I know it’s hard out there,” she added.
Fans of The View voiced their displeasure over Goldberg’s remarks on social media. “I can’t stand these rich Hollywood liberal millionaires who pretend to know what it is like to live paycheck to paycheck,” one user wrote on X.
Another X user criticized, “Whoopi Goldberg, aka Karen, is so out of touch with reality. Here she is saying she’s one of us, the working class, while she’s worth $60 million dollars.”
“The entire panel cannot relate to regular people. Please stop! It’s condescending. Have some poor people on the show and learn a few things,” another user added.
