Located in Mali, Dogon Country, which is inhabited by the famous Dogon Tribe is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the country. The Bandiagara Escarpment, located in Dogon Country is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Dogon people are famously known for their architecture, unique culture and traditions, sculptures and of course their mask dances.

The highly revered Dogon masks are worn to mark occasions throughout the year. The masks, according to the Dogon serve as a connection between heaven, which is the afterlife and earth. One of the most popular dance rituals is the “dama”.

This dance ritual is performed to honour and facilitate the passing of a deceased person according to customs. Without the “dama” mask dance, the Dogon believe the deceased cannot transition to the afterlife in peace.

Check out these unique and beautiful Dogon masks.
