Harrods, a prominent department store in London is turning heads for selling a Stella McCartney dress for $1,660. It’s not the price that is mind blogging. It’s the fact that the style of dress – which is reminiscent of African print, can be made for much less – ($10) in Africa – with workmanship and cost of material considered.
With talks of cultural appropriation, it is imperative to highlight this because once again, a designer has copied a common style of dress worn by many and has inflated the price and to add insult to injury, not credited the original source.
Stella McCartney is an English fashion designer. McCartney has previously been accused of high-jacking Ankara prints when she featured the popular look during her 2017 Paris Fashion Week runway show. She was quoted as describing her collection as “a joyful exploration of British style,” as reported by Women’s Wear Daily.
