Rwanda played host to the fifth International Conference on Family Planning, which saw the release of a new report on the status of family planning in the world, and on the continent.

The report, FP2020: Catalyzing Collaboration, produced by  Family Planning 2020, indicated that there has been an increase in contraception use in the world, with more than 317 million women and girls currently choosing to use a modern method of contraception.

On the continent, Eastern and Southern Africa are on the forefront, followed by Central Africa and Western Africa.  Specific countries in these regions have shown a high increase in the use of contraception at a time when global funding for family planning has been dwindling.
