These 4 disappointed African opposition leaders declared themselves president

Etienne Tshisekedi – DR Congo

When he lost in the 2011 elections to the incumbent Joseph Kabila, the Congolese opposition leader declared himself the “elected president” of the country, claiming that the vote counting process was flawed. He was even reported to have called on his supporters to break into the prisons and release those who were arrested during recent demonstrations. “I’m giving a 48-hour deadline for all opposition prisoners to be released. Past that deadline, I will ask the population to attack prisons and free them, and as president, I’m ordering prison guards not to resist,” the 79-year-old at the time was reported to have said. He was subsequently placed under house arrest but died on February 1, 2017, in Brussels, Belgium while undergoing treatment.
