Barbecuing while black
A black family visiting Lake Merritt, California was spending some quality time with one another. Being that was a sunny day out, they decided to barbeque; as they’ve done for years.
An unidentified white woman noted that the family was grilling in an area not designated for that activity. She proceeded to call the police.
Oakland City Council Member Lynette Gibson McElhaney iterated, “I want to encourage people to know when to call the police when to raise a question of regulations with the City Council; maybe there is a passive way to reach out to us.”
