The African island of Sao Tome and Principe was discovered by Portuguese explorers in the 15th century. Sao Tome is the capital and largest city of Sao Tome and Principe with an estimated population of about 71,868 people.

The combined area of the archipelago is just 964 km², this is about twice the size of Andorra or more than five times the size of Washington, DC.

It is the second-smallest African sovereign state after Seychelles as well as the smallest Portuguese speaking country. In the 16th century, this Island became the continent’s largest exporter of sugar.
