Eric Garner: Officer dismissed after 5 years

Eric Garner died in New York after a police officer put him in a headlock and chokehold for 15 mins while arresting him. This incident resurrected and brought back the awareness about police brutality.

Eric, in a video, which circulated on social media was pinned to the ground after the officer approached him of selling single cigarettes without tax stamps. He lost consciousness and repeatedly said, “I can’t breathe” eleven times while lying facedown on the floor. Eric was pronounced dead later in the hospital after one hour.

After several proceedings and a grand jury, on 16 July 2019, it was announced that the officers involved in Garner’s death will not face any federal charges. He was however fired from the service after it was concluded he acted contrary to laws of the NYPD.
