He was accused of running down Guinea’s economy
Just as many first African presidents, Toure was accused of running down his country’s economy. During his first years as president, he was able to stabilize Guinea’s economy through a ten-million-pound loan he received from Nkrumah in support of the country’s development. He also made contacts with the international community who aided in different developmental opportunities.
However, towards the 1970s, the economic development was on the slower side and citizens were faced with hardship. Many Guineans had fled to neighbouring countries to seek refuge from the harsh political and economic situations in their country. The situation was so bad that the market women in Conakry rose up against him.
