Her hard work in childhood education
After her high school education, Chisholm studied sociology at Brooklyn College and earned her BA in 1946. Sources say she was a prize-winning debater in college, a skill that would become useful throughout her political career. Chisholm obtained a Master’s degree in elementary education at Columbia University in 1952 and while a student, she began teaching at a nursery school. By 1953, she was already the director of two daycare centres, a position she held for six years. Due to her expertise in early childhood education, she became an educational consultant for New York City’s Division of Day Care from 1959 through 1964.
