5 things to know about Raheem L. Mullins, Connecticut Supreme Court Chief Justice nominee

Honorable Raheem L. Mullins, an esteemed American lawyer, has been nominated by Governor Ned Lamont for the position of Chief Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court.

On August 29, 2024, Governor Lamont announced his nomination of Mullins to succeed Richard A. Robinson, who has announced his retirement plans.

Prior to this nomination, Justice Mullins has served as an Associate Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court since November 1, 2017.

Mullins is recognized as one of the youngest individuals ever to serve on the Connecticut Supreme Court.

Upon nominating Mullins, Governor Lamont stated: “Justice Mullins has had an impressive career serving on all three levels of Connecticut’s courts. During his years on the bench, he has earned the respect of many in the state’s legal community and those who have appeared before him as a fair, transparent, measured, and sensible jurist with a keen interest in researching and analyzing the complex legal issues that come before him.”

As Mullins awaits confirmation by the General Assembly next year, here are five key facts to know about him:

1. Associate Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court
Raheem L. Mullins became one of the youngest justices to serve on the state’s highest court in 2017 following his appointment as an Associate Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court.

2. Legal Career
Born in Middletown, Mullins clerked for Judge Frederick Brown on the Massachusetts Appeals Court from 2004 to 2005. He worked diligently and rose through the ranks in the legal field. Before his appointment to the Connecticut Supreme Court, Mullins served on the Connecticut Appellate Court. He was nominated to the Appellate Court on March 14, 2014, following the mandatory retirement of Stuart D. Bear. After his confirmation by the Connecticut General Assembly on April 25, 2014, Mullins assumed office on May 6, 2014. He also served as a Superior Court judge, where he earned a reputation for fairness and dedication to justice.

3. Educational Background
Mullins is a graduate of Watkinson School in Hartford. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, and later, a Juris Doctor degree from Northeastern University School of Law in Boston, Massachusetts.

4. Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
Justice Mullins is a well-known advocate for diversity and inclusion within the legal profession. He has been actively involved in initiatives aimed at promoting greater representation of minorities in the judiciary and legal field.
