Rapper and DJ MC Lyte has taken 5-year-old artist VanVan under her wing as part of her goal to support the next generation of rappers.
VanVan, whose real name is Savannah McConneaughey, just dropped a new song titled “Pull Out The Keys.” The music video features her dancing while rapping in a car beside her father.
The 53-year-old DJ cheered the 5-year-old star on Instagram with the caption, “Let’s go @therealvanvan_ #PullOutTheKeys.”
Vanvan initially got public attention in 2023 with her rhymes and dances, which have earned her approximately 350,000 Instagram followers and a verified profile.
The young music prodigy told Complex during an interview, “My dad just puts on a beat and I just start rapping.”
Her father, Reggie McConneaughey, who doubles as her manager, said, “I just throw on a beat. I just throw a subject out there and I just want to see what her vocabulary looks like. And that’s one reason why I started doing it because I just wanted to see what her vocabulary was, how good she could put stuff in a sentence…in a fun way.”
He added, “And it actually helped her because when she went to take her test for school, she scored so high in that part. They were amazed at how high she scored just from memory and doing other things.”
According to Hiphopdx, Mc Lyte and VanVan first connected at the 2023 Kennedy Center Honors, when they performed “Ladies First” in honor of honoree Queen Latifah alongside Yo-Yo, Monie Love, and D-Nice.
