Kenya and Somalia

There is an ongoing maritime border dispute between the two countries, a case which is currently at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) after unsuccessful bilateral negotiations. A 2014 suit filed by Somalia with the ICJ said Kenya has encroached on its 100,000 square-kilometre marine territory in the Indian ocean which holds possible oil and gas deposits. Kenya states that the marine boundary is determined by a parallel line of latitude to the east, based on the standards set by the colonial powers. Mogadishu argues that the boundary extends to the south-east as an extension of the land border. This would incorporate a large swathe of what Kenya considers its Exclusive Economic Zone, the African News Agency reports. Last month, Kenya recalled its ambassador to Somalia, and Mogadishu did the same by recalling its own ambassador.
