The celebrated singer got international fame in the 1990s during the country’s civil war with her widely popular album Sambolera, which was sung in Swahili, Kirundi, and French.
The song was played on several media platforms and her subsequent albums also got wide reach and sales around the world.
This year, the 59-year-old joined the jury of the Cannes Film Festival. The internationally acclaimed singer in 2016 went on a global campaign against Burundi’s president, Pierre Nkurunziza after his bid for a third term in office sparked protests across the country.
