Former President of Uganda, Milton Obote…Deutsche Welle

Milton Obote

Apollo Milton Obote served as Uganda’s Prime Minister from 1962 to 1966.

He became Uganda’s second president serving from 1966 to 1971 then from 1980 to 1985.

During Obote’s administration, many of his adversaries were jailed without trial. His presidency was marred with torture, murder and terror; the institution of a secret police led by his cousin was responsible for numerous atrocities.

He served two terms before a coup forced him to flee to Kenya, then Zambia.

On October 10, 2005, Obote died of kidney failure in a hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa.
