Police arrested two senior army officers and a police general accused of taking part in an attempted coup in May 2015. Major General Godefroid Niyombare – the former intelligence chief who launched the coup – was captured while others said that he was at large. Twelve soldiers who backed the attempted coup against Nkurunziza were killed in the midst of fierce fighting when they tried to seize the state radio station.
