University of Colorado’s football team started their summer training camps in Boulder last week. But the Buffaloes’ head coach Deion Sanders has been noticeably absent due to a health issue that has kept him at his Texas family estate.
Per USA TODAY, the 57-year-old former NFL star’s eldest son, Deion Jr., provided an update on his father’s condition during a YouTube livestream on Sunday. Deion Jr., who addressed viewers from their Texas estate, said that his father was “feeling well” and in his room at the time.
“He’ll tell y’all soon enough what he going through, what he went through,” Deion Jr. said. He, however, did not provide a specific time they’ll be returning to Boulder.
“When we get back in Boulder, I don’t know,” Deion Jr. stated. “I’m waiting until my dad leaves. When he leaves, then I’ll go. Until then, I’m gonna sit here with him.”

Sanders spending time at home came after he canceled a booking to speak at a June 8 symposium organized by The Foundation for Sickle Cell Research. The Pro Football Hall of Famer, who was initially booked as the event’s keynote speaker, explained he was no longer able to fulfill that duty because of an “unavoidable last-minute scheduling change.” NBA legend Magic Johnson was ultimately booked as his replacement.
This isn’t the first time Sanders has experienced a health setback. In 2021, two toes on his left foot were amputated due to blood clot issues.
Sanders has also reclined from media attention since April’s NFL draft. And though he implied it was because of a health issue, he did not provide any further details, USA TODAY reported. During a podcast session with former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel, Sanders touched on his condition.
“What I’m dealing with right now is at whole nother level,” Sanders told Samuel, adding that he was, however, on the mend.
